PERFORATED FOLDING CLOSURES SECURE MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY’S SOUTHBANK LIBRARY

The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) recently completed the installation of high-quality perforated folding closures at Melbourne University’s Southbank Library, located at their St Kilda Road campus. This installation is part of a larger effort to provide secure and efficient access to key spaces within the university.

Collaboration with Architects and Project Managers

The project was specified by Lyons Architects, a renowned architectural firm based in Bourke Street, Melbourne. The project managers overseeing the installation were the APM Group, headquartered in Exhibition Street, Melbourne.

 

Unique Features of the Folding Closures

The folding closures installed at Melbourne University’s Southbank Library incorporate several unique features that set them apart from traditional security doors. One of the most significant elements is the perforated mesh infills. These mesh panels were chosen specifically to provide the required ventilation and airflow within the building, addressing the needs of the architects while maintaining a secure environment.

In addition to the perforated mesh, the doors feature two 45-degree bends. These bends were necessary to navigate the curved apertures of the library, ensuring a perfect fit while maintaining the integrity of the design.

 

Seamless Locking Mechanism

Another innovative aspect of the perforated folding closures is their advanced locking system. The doors are equipped with sequential and intermediate up/down locks, allowing for a seamless lock-up effect. This system eliminates the need for a floor track, which can often be cumbersome and prone to wear over time. The locking mechanism enhances the overall functionality and security of the doors while preserving the aesthetic integrity of the library’s design.

SMART FOLDING CLOSURE DOORS SECURE RETAIL PREMISES AT GEELONG UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

The Project

The architects on the project were Baade Harbour Australia Pty Ltd (BHA) and the project managers were Geelong based St Ferrer Building Contractors.

ATDC’s FC1 folding closure door has been specified at other university projects across Australia including at ANU’s Hancock Library as well as Melbourne University Library at Southbank.

 

What We Did

ATDC’s FC1 300mm wide panel folding collapsible door was the product specified by BHA. The door was specified with natural anodised aluminium extruded frames and polycarbonate infills to provide maximum through vision.

Seamless lock up was achieved by the inclusion of intermediate up/down locking mechanisms. The door traverses a very tight radius 90 degree turn at one end as it folds back and retracts to a joinery storage cupboard at one end of the premises.

The Showroom Project
The job description was essentially to protect the high value merchandise with a smart, elegant, corporate looking collapsible door system that would complement the prestigious Ferrari brand image without costing a fortune.

 

Providing Bespoke Security

The technical requirements demanded a closure that could span a multi-curved 44 metre wide retail frontage at 3m in height which folded back to occupy a minimum amount of storage space when unlocked and opened during trading hours. And further to provide maximum visual display of the Ferraris during the limited times the shop remains closed.

 

Our FC1 Wide Panel Folding Doors

ATDC’s FC1 wide panel collapsible closure easily satisfied and even surpassed all these requirements.  The 300mm wide panel door was installed with its heavy duty top track, heavy duty industrial grade top roller wheels and interlocking heavy duty hinges. This provided a low friction, easy operation despite the expansive size of the door.

By utilising multiple intermediate keyed alike up/down locking mechanisms, a seamless lock up is achieved without the need for any cumbersome removable mullions nor any floor tracking. Browse further information about this product.

The folding accordion doors at the Ferrari showroom are finished in a professional natural anodised finish which is standard for these doors although a full range of powdercoated options are available on request from the Dulux Range of powdercoated finishes.
